How to Get Through a Sober Month: A Practical Guide

Pick your dates, tell people early, and plan for the moments you usually drink: Friday nights, dinners and stress. Stock drinks you enjoy instead, choose a go-to line for when someone offers you one, and do the month with a friend who checks in daily. Talk to a doctor first if you drink heavily.

Before you start

Pick the month. Dry January and Sober October are popular because lots of people do them at once, which makes saying no easier. Any 30 days works: see Dry 30.

Tell people early. A quick message to friends before the month starts saves a lot of explaining at the bar.

Find a partner. A friend doing the same month makes every evening out easier and gives you someone to text when it’s hard. See how to find an accountability partner.

Set a stake. Agree on what happens if one of you quits. See how to choose stakes.

Plan for your drinking moments

Write down when you usually drink. For most people it’s a handful of situations:

Moment What to do instead
Friday after work A new ritual: a walk, a class, or a favorite alcohol-free drink
Dinner out Order a mocktail or alcohol-free beer first, before anyone asks
Parties Arrive with your own drinks and a set time to leave
Stress at night Tea, a shower, or a message to your partner

Have a line ready

When someone offers you a drink, a short, easy answer helps: “I’m doing Dry January”, “I’m on a challenge with a friend”, or just “Not tonight, thanks.” You don’t owe anyone a longer explanation.

Track the days

Seeing the streak grow is motivating. In GLIN, each alcohol-free day is one tap, and your partner gets a notification when you log, so you both know the other is still in.

If you slip

One drink isn’t a failure. Decide with your partner before day one what a slip means: reset, make it up at the end, or keep going. Then move on.

Get help if you need it

If you find it hard to stop drinking, or you feel unwell when you do, talk to a doctor before you stop: alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. In the US, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357 (samhsa.gov).

Frequently asked questions

What is the hardest part of a sober month?

For most people it is social situations and routines, like Friday nights or dinner out, rather than physical cravings. Planning for those moments in advance makes the biggest difference.

What should I drink instead of alcohol?

Anything that feels like a treat: sparkling water with citrus, non-alcoholic beer or wine, kombucha, or a mocktail. Having something in your hand makes social events easier.

What if I slip up?

One drink does not undo the month. Decide in advance with your partner whether a slip resets the count or you simply keep going.

Is it safe to stop drinking suddenly?

For most people, yes, but if you drink heavily or feel unwell when you stop, talk to a doctor first. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous.
