The rules

  1. No added sugar for 30 days: no sweets, desserts, sugary drinks or foods with added sugars or syrups.
  2. Read ingredient labels. Sugar has many names, like sucrose, corn syrup, dextrose and cane juice.
  3. Whole fruit and plain dairy are allowed in most versions. Agree on your rules before day one.

Why go 30 days without added sugar

Added sugar shows up in far more than desserts: sauces, bread, cereal, flavored yogurt and drinks. A 30-day break makes you read labels, notice where sugar hides, and find out how much of the craving is habit. It’s a popular reset on its own or alongside 75 Soft.

For context, the World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of your daily energy intake, and ideally below 5%. This page isn’t medical advice; if you have diabetes or another condition, talk to your doctor before changing your diet.

Tips for cravings

  • Clear the obvious stuff out of the house before day one.
  • Plan an after-dinner replacement: tea, fruit, a walk.
  • Watch the drinks. Sodas, sweetened coffees and juices are the easiest added sugar to miss.
  • Expect the first week to be the hardest. Tell your partner when it’s tough; a boost from them helps.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as added sugar?

Any sugar or syrup added during processing or preparation, including table sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup and fruit juice concentrates. Sugar naturally present in whole fruit and plain milk is not added sugar.

Can you eat fruit on a no sugar challenge?

Most versions allow whole fruit because its sugar comes with fiber. Some stricter versions cut fruit juice and dried fruit. Decide with your partner and write it into your rules.

How much added sugar is recommended?

The World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of daily energy, ideally below 5%. The American Heart Association suggests no more than about 25 grams a day for most women and 36 grams for most men.
