The short list

1. GLIN: You in?

Best for: Doing a challenge with a friend. Platforms: iPhone and Android. Price: Free to download.

Invite a friend to the same challenge, see each other’s logs live, and agree on a stake before you start. Best for sprints like 75 Hard or a dry month; it is our app, so weigh this pick accordingly.

2. Focusmate

Best for: Getting work done in live sessions. Platforms: Web. Price: Free plan; paid plan for unlimited sessions.

Book a video co-working session with another person and both work quietly on your own tasks. Excellent for focus and procrastination, but it is about work sessions, not habits or challenges with a friend.

3. stickK

Best for: Money-backed commitment contracts. Platforms: Web, iOS. Price: Free; you set optional cash stakes.

Created by Yale behavioral economists. Set a goal, invite a referee to verify it, and put money on the line that goes to a charity or anti-charity if you fail. Your referee checks your work rather than doing it with you.

How we picked

We included apps where another person, or a real cost, is central to staying on track. For each, we checked the developer’s own site or App Store listing for features and pricing as of the date above. We make GLIN, so we’ve tried to say clearly where another app is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is an accountability partner app?

An app that makes someone else part of your goal, either a friend who does it with you, a referee who checks your progress, or a stranger who works alongside you, so quitting has a social or financial cost.

What is the best free accountability app?

GLIN, Habitica and stickK can all be used for free. Beeminder and Focusmate have free plans with paid upgrades.

Do I need a friend to use these apps?

For GLIN, yes, or you can do a challenge solo. Focusmate matches you with other members, and stickK, Beeminder and Forfeit work with or without a friend involved.
